Kathmandu, January 19

The Kathmandu metropolitan city has started removing algae from the Ranipokhari in a bid to make it clean and more beautiful.

It started removing algae from Monday to maintain the beauty of the historical Ranipokhari as they started covering the pond there. The cleaning is being done with the support of 20 municipal police personnel daily, says KMC Municipal Police Chief, Dhanapati Sapkota.

He adds, “The National Reconstruction Authority has not handed over the Ranipokhari to the city government after its reconstruction. However, we started removing the algae as the heritage site is under our jurisdiction.”

Discussion is underway regarding the issue of filling the water in Ranipokari as the problem has surfaced due to decreasing water level, shares Sapkota.

After the reconstruction, 32.2 million litres of water was filled in Ranipokhari and there is now only around 20 million litres of water.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari had inaugurated Ranipokhari on October 21, 2020, after its reconstruction.

Ranipokhari was damaged by the Gorkha earthquake of 2015. The National Reconstruction Authority had completed the reconstruction in five years.
