New Supreme Court justices sworn-in

Kathmandu, April 21

Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana has administered the oath of office and secrecy to newly appointed apex court justices Kumar Chudal and Nahakul Subedi on Wednesday.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the chief justice office in the court although the apex court justices would take their oath of office at the President’s Office in the past. However, recently, the President’s Office has told the court that the function could be held at the court itself.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari had appointed them as justices on Tuesday as the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee endorsed their names for the position last week.

On March 12, the Judicial Council had nominated them for the vacant positions. Until now, they were serving as chief judges at Patan High Court and Surkhet High Court respectively.

Before the parliamentary hearing, the Supreme Court Bar Association and some media had argued Subedi did not have the sufficient experience required to be qualified for the position. Even a writ petition was filed against him, but the Supreme Court had cleared the decks.
