Supreme Court orders govt not to implement new citizenship ordinance

Kathmandu, June 10

The constitutional bench of the Supreme Court has told the government not to implement the new citizenship ordinance the government issued a few weeks ago.

The ordinance was issued to please the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, after which it had joined the Oli government.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana and justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Mira Khadka, Hari Krishna Karki and Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada issued the order on Thursday.

The bench had received six writ petitions against the ordinance.

Meanwhile, the bench also issued a show-cause notice in the name of the defendants to explain why the ordinance was issued.
