Kathmandu, March 9

Security forces in Kathmandu have been placed on high alert as former King Gyanendra Shah returns to the capital after a week-long stay in Pokhara. Monarchist parties and groups are preparing to stage demonstrations to welcome him.

From early morning, security presence has been increased at key locations, including Narayanhiti Palace Museum, Tribhuvan International Airport, and other sensitive areas and major intersections.

According to AIG Tek Tamang, chief of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, a security strategy has been devised to prevent any potential unrest caused by large gatherings and processions. “We have prepared a strategy to handle any situation that may arise,” he said.

Security sources confirmed that former King Gyanendra Shah is expected to arrive in Kathmandu this afternoon. Monarchist groups are planning to march from various parts of the city and gather in front of the airport gate to welcome him.

In light of this, Kathmandu’s Chief District Officer Rishiram Tiwari chaired a meeting of the District Security Committee. The meeting discussed preventive measures against possible disorder, unruly behaviour, and illegal activities.

An official stated that security personnel will be deployed “as required,” with the possibility of mobilising all four security agencies if necessary.

Following the committee’s decision, uniformed officers and undercover intelligence personnel have been stationed at key locations across Kathmandu since early morning.
