Kathmandu, October 21
Mobile phone traders have complained the import of mobile phones in Nepal has not been controlled yet as the government could not strongly implement the new rule introduced in this bid.
Earlier, the government had announced to implement the new Mobile Device Management System (MDMS), according to which the mobile phones without their IMEI numbers registered could not be used in the country.
The rule was said to come into effect from mid-July, but three months on, it has not been implemented, says Deepak Malhotra, the president of the Mobile Phone Importers’ Association Nepal, in an interview with the News Agency Nepal. He demands the government strongly implement the rule to make a conducive environment for the traders to do their business.
He says the government can completely control the illegal import of mobile phones within 15 days if it is really willing.
The association claims about 25 to 50 per cent of the mobile phones being traded in the Nepali market are illegally imported.
