Kathmandu, January 30
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has warned of discontinuing the ruling coalition if the coalition members are not ready to endorse the disputed MCC deal signed with the United States government in 2017.
Deuba says he is under pressure to endorse the controversial deal during the current session of the House of Representatives itself.
During a meeting of the alliance on Saturday evening, Deuba urged his partners to help him endorse the deal thereby saving the coalition, according to CPN-Unified Socialist leader Jhala Nath Khanal, who was present at the meeting.
But, CPN-Maoist Centre senior leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha immediately opposed the prime minister and said his party was not ready to endorse the MCC deal as it is now.
But, Deuba told Shrestha that lawmakers would be free to vote whether to endorse the deal.
“We also told him that he could partner with CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli to pass the deal. We do not want to save the alliance in this condition,” another leader who is against the deal informs Onlinekhabar.
Nepali politicians and society are virtually divided about the MCC deal as many people argue the deal has some provisions against the national sovereignty and national interests whereas many others think it is a great help for the country’s development.
