According to the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, the number of dengue cases in the country has surpassed 5,500, with Sunsari district accounting for over half of the total infections.

Rudra Prasad Marasini, a director of the division, revealed that the country has reported a total of 5,688 cases of dengue infection since January. Sunsari district alone recorded 3,486 recorded dengue cases over the past seven months.

Marasini attributed the surge in infections to people’s recklessness. The continuous rainfall in recent days, combined with the neglect of proper sanitation measures, has contributed to the alarming rise in dengue spread, he said.

Sunsari, Dhading, Kaski, Darchula, Kathmandu, Sankhuwasabha, Myagdi, Morang, Kanchanpur and Jhapa are the most affected districts. Sunsari alone has 3,486 cases while Kathmandu has 96 cases and Jhapa has 56 cases.

The Koshi province is the most affected one with 3,821 dengue cases while Madhesh province has the least number with 26 cases.

Four persons have died due to the infection so far.
