A bizarre theft has been reported in Pennsylvania, US, where thieves stole 100,000 eggs from a grocery supplier’s truck.
According to a BBC report, the stolen eggs are valued at approximately $40,000. The incident occurred on February 1, with police stating that the thieves took the eggs from the back of the truck.
The theft comes amid soaring egg prices in the US due to an ongoing bird flu outbreak. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that the disease has caused severe egg shortages and price hikes across the country. Over the past year, egg prices have surged by 36.8%, with grocery stores in Pennsylvania selling a dozen eggs for $4.69 or more.
Authorities are investigating the theft and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
Despite USDA predictions that overall food prices will rise by 2.2% this year, egg prices could increase by up to 20%. Since the bird flu outbreak in 2022, over 136 million birds have been culled in the US.
Marketing professor Saloni Vastan from Emory University noted that panic buying due to fears of further price hikes is worsening the supply shortage.
