Kathmandu, April 4
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi held a 35-minute-long meeting in Bangkok.
According to a high-level government source in Bangkok, the meeting took place on Friday at the Oriental Hotel, where Modi was staying. No other officials from either side were present during the discussion.
“A lot of speculation has been circulating regarding Nepal-India relations, so it was necessary for the two leaders to have a private discussion to clarify matters,” a source close to the Prime Minister told Onlinekhabar.
After the meeting, PM Oli tweeted, stating that he had a cordial conversation with his friend, Indian PM Modi, in Bangkok. He wrote, “Had a warm dialogue with my friend, Indian Prime Minister Modi. The bilateral discussions were constructive and meaningful. My thanks for the mutual trust.”
A member of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat mentioned that various topics were discussed to enhance bilateral dialogue and trust.
The two leaders, who last met in New York in September, discussed several issues of bilateral interest during their sidelines meeting at BIMSTEC.
During the meeting, PM Oli extended a formal invitation to PM Modi for the Sagarmatha Dialogue, scheduled for May. In response, Modi expressed his intent to visit Kathmandu and thanked Oli for the invitation.
The detailed report of their conversation is yet to be disclosed. However, despite the presence of foreign ministers from both countries in Bangkok, they were not included in the meeting.
According to the latest updates, the discussion was mutually beneficial. The Indian side stated that the meeting focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in areas such as development partnership, energy, people-to-people relations, and connectivity.
