Kathmandu, April 20
The ongoing protest by teachers and civil servants demanding the enactment of the Education Act continued in Kathmandu today. Protesters were seen marching from Maitighar towards New Baneshwor in the morning hours.
Unlike previous days, when demonstrations typically occurred from 12 PM to 3 PM, today’s protest began early in anticipation of a separate protest announced by the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP). Teachers planned to demonstrate from 9 AM to 12 PM and were preparing to conclude early to avoid overlap with the RPP’s program, which begins at 11 AM in Bijulibazar.
Teachers have been staging sit-ins and rallies in the Maitighar–Baneshwor area since April 2. Despite continuous dialogue with the government, no agreement has been reached on the proposed Education Act. In response, teachers announced an education strike on April 7, halting all academic activities nationwide.
Their protest has also disrupted traffic flow along the Maitighar–Baneshwar route.
