Chief Justice appointment: Parliamentary hearing committee endorses Rana’s nomination

Kathmandu, January 1

The Parliamentary Special Hearing Committee has endorsed the Constitutional Counci’s decision to nominate Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana to the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal.

Rana, who will take charge of the apex court after formally being appointed to the post by President Bhandari, will have a tenure of four years.

The committee’s decision comes as members of committee conducted a hearing on complaints received against Rana and listened to his responses to the allegations levelled against him. Rana, during the hearing, told the lawmakers that the verdicts he passed as a judge were done in good faith.

He also told lawmakers that he does not want to put the post of Chief Justice to disrepute when he completes his tenure. A total of nine complaints had been filed against Rana.

Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra retires from Tuesday.

The judicial council had named Rana, along with Justice Deepak Raj Josee as potential candidates for the job. The Constitutional Council, however, chose Rana over Josee as Josee’s nomination had already been rejected by the hearing committee.
