Kathmandu, May 9

The Federal Alliance is likely to announce new protest programmes today claiming the government failed to keep its promise to amend the constitution on time.

The major constituent of the Alliance, the Rastriya Janata Party Nepal, warned of announcing fresh protests after the major opposition CPN-UML clarified that it could not support the amendment bill tabled by the government.

The UML had expressed its objection to the bill during a meeting called by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal among top leaders of his own CPN-Maoist Centre, Nepali Congress, UML and RJPN in a bid to convince the RJPN that the government would soon endorse the constitution amendment.

According to RJPN leader Raj Kishor Yadav, the Alliance would announce new programmes today itself.

“Prime Minister Prachanda had said he would amend the constitution before the elections and increase the number of local levels,” he said after the meeting, “But, we have been forced to launch the agitation as none of these promises was fulfilled.”

During the meeting, the PM had assured that the amendment procedure would begin in the Parliament meeting on May 18, but it did not convince the RJPN leaders.
