Kathmandu, May 9

Laxman Lal Karna, leader of the United Democratic Madheshi Front, said on Monday they will not let the KP Oli government hold local elections unless it addresses their concerns.

The Sadbhavana Party vice-chair, speaking at a face-to-face in Kathmandu on Monday, said: The number of provinces has not been fixed yet. Structures stipulated in the constitution have not materialised yet. Several parties are against this government. We will not let the government conduct local elections if the situation remains unchanged.

Karna claimed that the government will not be able to implement its policies and programmes. The talks team formed under Kamal Thapa does not have the authority to reach an understanding with us, so holding talks with it is pointless, he said.

Karna said they will sit for talks only if Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and UCPN-Maoist Chair Prachanda sit for talks with them.

Still, he said the UDMF will respond to the government’s written invite for talks after holding a meeting, in a few days. He said the government should withdraw court cases filed to frame cadres, form a judicial commission to investigate human rights violations (that occurred during the Madhesh movement) and provide treatment to those injured in the movement, so as to create a conducive environment for talks.
