Govt introducing letter grading system at higher secondary level

Kathmandu, February 23

Education Minister Giri Raj Mani Pokharel said at a press conference that the government will publish the results of Grades XI and XII using the letter grading system. Educational programmes under the Centre for Technical Education and Vocational Training will also adopt this system.

The government has already introduced the same system for SLC examinations. There are nine grades for SLC exams, while the government has yet to take a call on the number of grades for the higher secondary level.

The government has formed a committee under the coordination of Joint-Secretary Durga Aryal to provide suggestions on letter grading for the level, Pokharel informed.

Minister Poudel said they will implement distance learning and open learning systems for grades XI and XII from the next fiscal. As of now, these learning systems are in use at university and school levels.

The Ministry of Education has formed a five-member taskforce under the coordination of Khag Raj Bara, director-general at the Department of Education, for preparation of procedures governing open and distance learning systems at Grades XI and XII.

The ministry has also decided to collect suggestions for formation of a high-level National Education Commission by organising a workshop on February 28.
