Gyalbo Lhosar today, Year of the Bird starts

Kathmandu, February 27

Communities living in northern parts of Nepal, including Sherpas, are celebrating their new year (Gyalbo Lhosar) — which the government has declared a public holiday — on Monday by organising different programmes.

According to Sherpa culture expert Tika Sherpa Monday (February 27) marks the transition to the year of the bird from the year of the monkey.

We have a 12 year cycle and these years are named after Mouse, Bull, Tiger, Rabbit, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Money, Bird, Dog and Pig, Sherpa said. He added that his rites are conducted on the basis of the year he is born.

On the occasion of Lhosar, Himalayan Sherpa Cultural Centre is organising a programme at Sifalchaur, Kathmandu. Prime Minister Prachanda will attend the programme as the chief guest.
