There are days when you just want to sit in the sun and play chess with your friends as you watch the hustle and bustle of the city pass by. You keep on listening to the soothing techno music playing in the background. That is what you can do when you visit Kausi Dreamers’ Terrace in Thamel.
Based on a terrace (‘Kausi’ in Nepali), the restaurant gives out a laid-back vibe. The cool breeze and the warm sun complement each other along with the friendly staff who always serve you with a smile on their face.
Kausi has both table and floor seating options; it is up to you. You can sit on the table and watch the busy Thamel go by or can stretch your legs and relax on the cushion on the floor, reading your favourite book.
The restaurant since its inception has been serving a European menu for the thousands of tourists who come to stay in Kathmandu every year. But the owner has added a Nepali touch in order to attract the Nepali crowd which the place is seeing gradually.
Based on how much time and money you have, you can try both domestic and foreign cuisines.
During my recent tour, I tried a bit of both and they were quite lovely.
To start with, you can go for sandheko buff sukuti. The dry buff meat is spiced and seasoned perfectly. The sourness in the dish cancels out the spiciness which makes this an ideal starter while waiting for your mains. This also goes well with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
For the mains, opt for the mushroom risotto. The creamy rice dish is extremely delicious and fulfilling. The mushroom’s soft texture and flavours infuse into the creamy sauce, cooked quite well with the rice. There is a hint of earthiness as well in the dish, which smells just as enticing as it looked. You’ve got to try it when you visit this place.
Along with the risotto, you can try some grilled chicken wings. It is tender, juicy and grilled quite well. Although it is not marinated overnight, the dish still has enough flavours from the spices. Most wings around Kathmandu are overcooked, but at Kausi it is not so, which makes the dish delicious. It also goes well with the spicy sauce on the side.
Kausi also has traditional Nepali dishes like dal bhat and momo; and foreign delicacies like fish and chips and pizzas. It is also the Italian dishes that you should try. The place also has a range of Nepali and foreign beverages. Tourists visiting Thamel say it also sells one of the best coffees around the area. It also have a wide range of breakfast options.
The restaurant over the years has also been involved in cycling activities and sponsoring financially weak riders. During April in past few years, the place has been a home to a few tattoo artists who come to Nepal during the tattoo convention.
To sum things up, the place is cosy and neat, and is reasonably priced compared to other restaurants in the area.
