Low-intensity quakes a daily affair in Nepal, says National Seismological Centre

Kathmandu, April 4

How often do you experience an earthquake? Obviously, it depends on the quake’s magnitude.

A large number of earthquakes happen in the country every day, but hardly anyone notices most of them because they are of low intensity, says the National Seismological Centre.

After the Magnitude-7.6 earthquake of April 25, 2015, 445 aftershocks measuring above 4 on the Richter scale have occurred in the country, according to the centre. Daily, 40 quakes measuring less than 4 magnitude are hitting the country, it says.  After the April 25 mega quake, 12-15 quakes measuring less than 4 magnitude used to hit the country daily. But the centre did not keep the record of such quakes.

earth quakeThese days too, aftershocks are occurring. According to the centre’s Chief Lok Bijaya Adhikari, 30-40 quakes are We call them aftershocks, but these are quakes, he says.

A month into the April 25 mega quake, the country experienced 1,300 aftershocks of less than 4 magnitude. For quite sometime after the mega quake, there occurred 500 low-intensity quakes every day.

These days, aftershocks seem to have become a thing of the past. But this should not give us respite, for experts warn that non-occurrence of aftershocks accentuates the risk of a major quake event.

Meanwhile, the country experienced a quake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale at 9.40 am on Monday. The jolt had its epicentre in Bajura.
