Kathmandu, January 11
The Makar Mela that takes place every 12 years at Trivenighat in Panauti in Kavre might be suspended due to the rise in Covid-19 cases across the country.
The festival is believed to be the same as the Kumbha Mela, which takes place in Prayag, India.
Kavre’s Covid-19 management committee on Tuesday has decided to tell the organising committee not to hold the festival that takes place throughout the month of Magh (Jan-Feb) every 12 years.
Uddhav KC, Kavre’s chief district officer, said that it would be insensitive and wrong to hold a festival as cases were rising. He said he requested the festival’s organising committee to not hold it this year.
This also comes after the government, upon recommendation from the CCMCC, released a statement that banned such festivals from taking place. The committee has requested the festival’s organising committee to only do the bare minimum to celebrate the festival.
The organisers have been asked to maintain distance and follow all health and safety protocols.
