Nepal’s first female judge, Sharda Shrestha, has passed away. She breathed her last on Friday morning at the Nepal Police Hospital in Maharajgunj.
Shrestha was Nepal’s first female judge and the second woman to serve as a Supreme Court justice. “We have received official confirmation of her passing,” said Supreme Court spokesperson Nirajan Pandey. “Her family and relatives have informed us that her final rites will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat this evening.”
She had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for the past few days. After showing signs of improvement in the ICU, she was moved to a general ward, where she later passed away, Pandey added.
Shrestha was appointed as a Supreme Court justice on April 15, 2004, and retired on June 2, 2008. She was 84 years old.
