Kathmandu, March 4
The Election Commission, which is set to hold polls for President and Vice-president next week, has set a Rs 400,000 ceiling on the amount of money a candidate can spend on his/her campaign.
The commission, in a statement on Sunday, said that candidates can only spend up to Rs 400,000 for canvassing for the March 13 elections.
According to Nepal’s new constitution, the President and the Vice-president need to be of a different gender. Analysts believe that President Bhandari and Vice-president Pun will get a second term in office after the elections as the Left Alliance is likely to back their candidacy.
The Nepali Congress, the main opposition, however, is yet to name a candidate for the elections. According to a power-sharing deal between the UML and the Maoist Centre, the UML is to name the new President and the Maoists the Vice-president.
