The Pranab Mukherjee effect: These Kathmandu arteries are no-go zones for motorists

As India’s President Pranab Mukherjee arrives in Kathmandu on a three-day visit, a metropolis bereft of its vibrancy will greet him, thanks to stringent security arrangements. The Kathmandu Valley’s arteries will wear a deserted look with Traffic Police imposing a ban on movement of public and private vehicles along major arteries during the movement of Mukherjee and other VIPs and VVIPs around town.

In view of possible traffic congestion and security, government has declared November 2 a public holiday and Traffic Police have asked motorists to use alternative routes.

From 11.30 am till 3 pm, Gaushala, TIA, Tinkune, New Baneshwor, Maitighar, Singhadurbar, New Road Gate, Jamal, Keshar Mahal, Lainchaur, Lazimpat, Panipokhari, Narayan Gopal Chok, Thapathali, Old Baneshwor, Shakhamul and Putalisadak will be off-limits for public and private vehicles.

From 1 to 3 pm, Keshar Mahal, Lainchaur, Lazimpat, Panipokhari, Narayan Gopal Chok, Sorhakhutte and Jaya Nepal will be off-limits.

From 2 to 3.45 pm, there will be disruptions at Gaushala, TIA, Tinkune, New Baneshwor, Maitighar, Singhadurbar, Keshar Mahal, Lainchaur, Lazimpat, Durbarmarg, Ghantaghar, Old Buspark, Mitrapark, Chabahil, Bouddha, Thapathali, Jorpati, Sorhakhutte, Jaya Nepal, Koteshwor, Old Baneshwor, Shankhamul and Putalisadak.

From 6.30 pm till 8.30 pm, there will be traffic disruptions at Gaushala, TIA, Tinkune, New Baneshwor, Maitighar, Singhadurbar, Mitrapark, Chabahil, Bouddha, Thapathali, Kupondole, Tripureshwor, Teku, Bhotebahal, Kalimati, Soalteemod, Kalanki, Balkhu, Koteshwor, Old Baneshwor and Shankhamul, according to Traffic Police.

Aside from road transport, air traffic at Tribhuvan International Airport will also be affected for three consecutive days.
