Kathmandu, December 4
Most of the public vehicles in Kathmandu valley are running against the pollution standards set by the government, claim the monitors.
A team of officials from the Department of Environment, Metropolitan Traffic Police and Department of Transport Management tested the pollution of vehicles in Babarmahal in Kathmandu on Friday.
The Department of Environment said that most of the tested vehicles failed the pollution test. The team tested 54 vehicles, out of which 38 failed the pollution test.
Namaraj Ghimire, the director general of the Department of Environment, says that owners of the vehicles that fail the pollution test have been given time to make necessary changes to the vehicles so they run according to the government’s pollution standards.
He says they will have to come to the department for re-testing. Only after that will they be allowed to run their vehicles on the roads.
He warns that if the vehicles fail the pollution test again, they will be fined up to Rs 100,000 as per section 41 (2) of the Environment Protection Act 2019.
