Kathmandu, October 16
The body of one of the five Russian climbers who lost their lives during an expedition on Mount Dhaulagiri has been brought to Kathmandu. The body is currently kept at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, while efforts are underway to bring the remaining bodies.
The climbers were found dead at an altitude of 7,100 meters. The body of the deceased Russian climber was transported to Kathmandu via helicopter. A team of Sherpas, led by Mingma Sherpa, the operator of Seven Summit Treks, retrieved the body and brought it to the Italian Base Camp with the help of an Air Altitude helicopter.
The climbers had been missing since October 7, around 11 am, when they lost contact from an altitude of 7,600 meters while attempting to summit Dhaulagiri. According to the police, the bodies of Russian climbers Alexander Dusheko, Oleg Kurgloov, Vladimir Chistikov, Mikhail Nosenko, and Dmitry Shalilevoy were discovered on October 9.
The recovery of the bodies was delayed due to challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions, which made it impossible for helicopters to land or for rescuers to reach the site on foot. Rescuers had to be lowered by helicopter to retrieve the bodies.
The group of 14 male Russian climbers had come to Dhaulagiri through I.M. Trekking and Expedition. Two climbers successfully summited, while seven others abandoned the climb and returned midway. A previous helicopter mission to recover the bodies returned empty-handed.
