Districts in the Tarai are celebrating a festival called Siruwa or Judsheetal on Thursday.

The festival actually starts a day earlier. Devotees offer water, flowers and fruits to their guardian deities. Senior members of families sprinkle the water on younger members, giving them blessings of good health and longevity.

Local people also sprinkle water on trees around their houses with a belief that this will bring peace. People feast on local delicacies like Bari and Karahi during this festival. Youths celebrate the occasion by slinging sludge on each other and organising different cultural programmes.

At Saptari district headquarters Rajbiraj and other parts of the district, the festivities have been continuing since Thursday morning.
