Teachers’ Unions call for nationwide protest from March 31

Kathmandu, March 28

A group of 14 teachers’ unions has announced an indefinite protest in Kathmandu starting March 31, demanding reforms in the country’s education policies. In a joint statement, the unions urged all teachers and school staff across Nepal to gather in Kathmandu and take part in the movement until their demands are addressed.

The statement emphasized the need for a Quality School Education Act that prioritizes both students’ welfare and teachers’ rights. “Past agreements have not been implemented. We need a strong, student- and teacher-friendly education law. This time, we are ready for an indefinite battle,” the statement read.

The unions have also called on teachers not to participate in any government-organized training, seminars, workshops, or administrative duties during the protest period. The government has yet to respond to the teachers’ demands, but officials have indicated that discussions may be held to address the grievances.
