Gaighat, March 13
A wildfire has been raging at the Mahabharat community forest and Deurali forest, Udayapur district, for three days, says Harkadhwoj Khadka, a local.
The fire that started from northern parts of Fuljor forest area is now spreading close to villages, putting local populations in peril, according to Tejendra Choudhary of Handiya, Devdhar.
According to locals, the forest fire is endangering the lives of people living in about 500 houses in the area.
Badri Thapa, a local, says: We came to know that the fire started from the northern parts of Fuljor two days ago. We got this news albeit late. Three villages are under threat and locals are in no position to control the blazes.
So far, neither the district forest office nor local people have taken initiatives to put out the fire.
The forest office says locals are the ones to blame for the blaze as they smoke in forest areas and are not careful with fire. Locals say fire will engulf forests spread in seven villages, including Handiya, Jogidaha, Chappan and Saune Khanbu in the event of delays to extinguish it.
