Migration in Nepal has emerged as a pressing national issue, primarily due to a significant decline in the youth population choosing to leave their home country. Nepal’s poor socio-economic conditions, characterised by political instability, inadequate healthcare, and educational facilities, are often stated as driving factors.
Besides this, the change in perceptions of people regarding life in foreign nations is also a matter, which has never been focused on.
So is it only a result of the poor political condition of Nepal, or should we call it the result of a change in the perception of citizens?
In the pursuit of a better life
The unfulfilled desire from the home nation has deeply psychologically affected every citizen. Many individuals migrate out of necessity to meet their own and their families’ economic needs.
However, a significant portion of the youths migrate in pursuit of the perceived freedoms and luxuries that they envision to be available abroad. The educated population is attracted, students in particular, by the luxurious lifestyle rather than the education quality or facilities.
Moreover, many young people use migration as an escape from families and to absolve themselves of responsibility. This is the result of the abasement of the old generation as well as because of less attachment to one’s parents, festivals and culture as a result of an increasingly hectic schedule.
The income of the average Nepali is lower than the rising costs of living. This income is expected to cover the expenses of an entire family, from healthcare to basic needs, owning a house and car, and saving for future uncertainties.
Financial literacy and prudent investment practices are relatively new concepts for many elderly Nepalis, leaving the burden of supporting both parents and the younger generation on the current wage earner. This economic pressure often leaves no alternative. However, to seek opportunities in foreign nations as earning a foreign currency while legally residing abroad allows individuals to not only sustain themselves but also support their families back in Nepal.
Low income compared to the efforts
People are forced to start their jobs at low salaries in Nepal even after completing their degree, which is not even close to being worth the effort they put to earn this degree.
In Nepal, pursuing a job while studying is not commonly embraced, largely due to the educational system and limited job opportunities. Even if students manage to secure employment, it can be challenging for those belonging to middle to upper-class families to engage in low-wage jobs due to societal expectations.
Consequently, many Nepali students aspiring to attain an international education often find it advantageous to work while pursuing their studies. This approach not only allows them to build a solid professional background but also enables them to explore the field of finance management, which can significantly enhance their job prospects upon obtaining their degree.
To sum up, the inclination leans toward early workforce engagement, fostering independence, and earning respect in their chosen career path which seems to be missing in Nepal.
