Home Minister Shakti Basnet said on Monday the government will not keep quiet if any party launches a movement flouting democratic ways.
Basnet said this while talking to journalists in Biratnagar. Everyone has the right to organise a peaceful movement, he said, adding: No one has the right to engage in anarchic activities in the name of a movement.
In an oblique reference to United Democratic Madheshi Front’s plans to launch another movement from Baishakh, Basnet said: Now on, life will remain normal even during movements. The new constitution allows everyone to express dissatisfactions in a democratic manner. But the government will not backtrack from its responsibility on the maintenance of law and order and protection of life and limbs.
Minister Basnet argued that there’s no need for another movement as constitution amendments have already addressed UDMF’s demands. He stressed the need to address political problems through political means.
The supply situation will ease in a few days, Basnet said, adding: People will no longer have to wait in queues for cooking gas and other petroleum products.
Also a UCPN-Maoist leader, Basnet said efforts are on to establish a consensus government by bringing the main opposition Nepali Congress on board. He warned the NC not to seek an alternative to this government.
