Kathmandu, May 6
President Bidhya Devi Bhandari’s planned visit to India has been cancelled. She was to leave for India on May 9.
The trip got cancelled because the KP Oli government did not approve the visit, a source said. It’s still unclear as to why the Cabinet did not give its all clear for President Bhanadri’s visit.
The cancellation comes at a time when the government has just survived a bid to topple it. There were reports that India had a role in the bid that saw the main opposition Nepali Congress and the UCPN-Maoist, a partner in the Oli-led coalition, joining hands for a while to cause the collapse of the government. The Maoist party, according to some reports, stood against the government because it saw bids to jail its leaders on different pretexts. Apparently, goes a report, the Maoist party withdrew support to the main opposition owing to pressure from China.
