Senior leader of the CPN-UML, Jhala Nath Khanal, indicated on Sunday that the UML may join a government that is likely to take shape under the leadership of CPN-Maoist Centre Chair Prachanda.
Khanal said Prachanda should take initiatives for the formation of national consensus by utilising the time that President will allot while calling parties to form a unity government. He said Prachanda should invite parties, including the UML, for talks.
While taking part in the no-confidence motion against the KP Oli government in the Parliament on Sunday, Khanal said: If Prachanda truly feels national consensus is necessary, let’s hold talks for the same. And let’s review where PM failed. But if you people think the UML should be in the opposition, we wish you success.
Khanal, a former prime minister, said political parties have no option but to come together for the implementation of the new Constitution. It’s not that the UML dreads at the prospect of having to sit in the opposition, Khanal said, adding: Current plots have increased fears that implementing the Charter may not be possible.
The no-confidence motion has pulled the parties further apart, Khanal said.
The motion was not necessary, he said, adding: The no-confidence motion was tabled at a time when the focus should have been on implementing Oli government’s great programmes. This is unfortunate. This government improved relations with India. The no-confidence motion comes at a time when it was time to start implementing agreements reached with China. This is unfortunate and this will not take us ahead.
