Kathmandu, September 2
Balananda Poudel, chair of the Local Level Restructuring Commission, said on Friday that districts have demanded more local levels than what the commission has suggested.
So far, about 14 districts have forwarded their reports on local level restructuring to the commission, Poudel said, adding that most of these districts have demanded more local bodies than the commission has suggested.
The commission has proposed creating a total of 565 local levels at most. Currently, technical committees based in districts are busy sending their reports to the commission.
Poudel, speaking at an interaction that Local Development Journalists’ Society had organised, said there are disputes in several districts over the number of local levels and their boundaries. The commission will resolve the disputes through discussions with districts concerned, Poudel informed.
Two ruling parties — the Nepali Congress and the CPN-Maoist Centre — have already expressed their dissatisfaction against the proposal. They said the number of local levels that the commission has suggested will not be enough to make government services easily accessible.
At the interaction, Minister for Local Development Hit Raj Pandey said there’s a need to reach political understanding on the number of local levels and their boundaries.
