Taps running dry in Rolpa, no budget for maintenance of drinking water projects

Rolpa, January 25

Rolpa district has been suffering from shortage of drinking water for want of timely maintenance of drinking water projects.

Consumers say water supply has been disrupted because of non-allocation of budget for maintenance of these projects.

They say their problems have only increased with climate change causing sources of water to dry. Yam Kumari Oli of Mijhing-5 said she has to trek for 1.5 hours daily to fetch water from a source during the summer.

Drinking Water and Sanitation Sub-division Office Rolpa said some of the drinking water projects were constructed here about three decades ago. The office said it has not been able to repair these projects for want of budget. Oli shared that people like her have been finding it hard to manage water for cattle, bathroom and for other household purposes.

Man Prasad Rana Magar of Mijhing-5 said lack of timely maintenance of drinking water projects is causing shortage of water.

WASH focal person at the office, Dilli Raj Neupane, said the office has not been able to repair water projects despite growing demand from customers for want of budget.
