Palpa, April 14
This summer has brought fresh woes for the people of Mujhung VDC, Palpa district. The source of water at Pipaudi, Mujhung-7, has dried so much that locals cannot get even a pitcherful of water even in a day.
This is the same source that would not dry up even during the dry season, in previous years. The drying up of the source located at Mujhung VDC-7 has forced locals people to venture afar in search of water.
An acute scarcity of water has affected 200 households in ward numbers 1, 2 and 7 of Mujung VDC.
Sumitra Darnal, a local, said locals have to go all the way to Lamtange of Mujhung VDC-7 to fetch water.
We get a pitcherful of water after waiting for three hours, Darnal said, adding: With all other sources of water dried up, the source at Lamtange has become the sole water source for people from Mujhung. Locals can fetch water for drinking, at that place. For washing clothes and bathing, they have to go all the way to a stream in Mangala, Chhahara-5, Darnal said. Local elders said water sources have not recharged due to prolonged drought, thereby causing an acute shortage of water. Topnarayan Rayamajhi of Bhairavsthan-3 said more than a dozen sources of water dried up about two months ago. This has put housewives and children in great hardships.
