Kathmandu, February 19
The two ruling parties — the CPN-Maoist Centre and the Nepali Congress — have agreed on announcing the date for elections ‘pretty soon’.
The two parties, during a meeting at Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Sunday, concluded that they are not in a position to do what the United Democratic Madheshi Front has been saying: Announcing the date for elections by amending the Constitution.
After the meeting, Centre leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha said: I can’t say exactly at what time and what our the government will annnouce the date for elections. But it will surely make the announcement.
Centre spokesperson Pampha Bhusal said the government will announce the report of the Local Level Structuring Committee before poll date announcement. Through talks with the UDMF, the government will pledge to increase the number of local levels (in the southern plains).
Bhusal said the government will announce election date by holding consultations with the Election Commission and also push forward the Constitution amendment process.
