Constitution Amendment: UML, eight other opposition parties not to take part in process

Kathmandu, February 26

Nine opposition parties, including the CPN-UML, will not take part in parliamentary proceedings to amend the constitution.

The nine parties will neither take part in the deliberations nor register amendments to the bill, leaders of the opposition have decided.

The opposition has termed the amendment bill, drafted to address the demands of the Madheshi Morcha, as ‘anti-national’. It fears that the ruling coalition could steal some votes if the opposition decides to take part in the vote.

The ruling coalition presented the amendment bill before Parliament last week. A 72-hour deadline to register amendments to the bill elapses on Sunday.
