Kathmandu, August 13
NRNA has decided to establish a fund to provide relief to the kin of dozens of people who lost their lives during the monsoon floods and landslides and assistance to thousands of people displaced by the calamities.
An emergency meeting of the Non-Resident Nepali Association’s International Coordination Council on Sunday morning decided to establish the fund and to actively distribute relief to the people affected by the disasters.
“We are with the people in this hour of grief,” said NRNA President Shesh Ghale adding, “We have already received commitment of over Rs 10 million, we will procure the necessary relief materials and start distributing them.”
Ghale and his wife Jamuna’s MIT Foundation has announced that it will contribute Rs 10 million to the fund. NRNA’s Patron Jiba Lamichhane and VPs Bhawan Bhatta and Kumar Panta have pledged Rs 100,000 each for the cause. Other office bearers have also announced support for the fund.
The NRNA has been in touch with Home Minister Janardan Sharma to assess the needs of the people affected by the disasters. It says it aims to raise Rs 20 million before starting the campaign.
The association has called on Nepalis around the world to contribute to the fund. The association had also actively distributed relief after the 2015 earthquake and in the aftermath of the Indian blockade.
