It is hard to find a quiet place that serves good food in the city, where there is hardly any open space left. Finding a restaurant with a garden is quite a challenge. But after looking around for a while, I came across The Yard, located in a quiet alley in Sanepa.
Unlike most restaurants in the neighbourhood, The Yard by Oasis Garden Home, tucked away in a quiet residential area, is full of greenery. As I walked in, I was already drawn by the greenery and the small park tables around the area along with the fences. They are sure to give patrons a unique feel away from hustle and bustle of the city.
The restaurant was opened four months ago by Dhiraj Dhungana and two more partners. They also run a BnB above the restaurant called Oasis Garden Home, which they established in 2014 in Jhamsikhel. They moved to Sanepa after the earthquake.
The owners decided that the BnB would fit well with a restaurant that serves Italian and continental cuisine, along with some famous Nepali delicacies.
While we were sitting there listening to the birds chirp, our food arrives. We start with a typical Nepali dish: sukuti sadheko. The dry meat is spiced and seasoned perfectly and is ideal to nibble on while one waits for their mains. It’s a dish that goes well with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
After the delicious and spicy Nepali dish, we try an Italian dish, the mushroom bruschetta. There is something quite fascinating about the Italians and their range of bread dishes. The sautéed mushroom which comes with shaved parmesan complemented the baguette. I could taste each component, in every bite: toasty bread, olive oil, a hint of garlic, the delicious mushroom and a mild taste of parmesan– a dish that would go well with a glass of wine.
For our mains, we try one of their specials, the grilled chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The grilled chicken, wrapped in a creamy mushroom sauce, was tender and juicy and tasted quite good. The mashed potato was and the veggies went well with the chicken. This can be an ideal lunch during this monsoon.
The restaurant has dishes that caters to both Nepali and expats. The grilled salmon, I hear, is one of the best in town along with the pork chops which have been getting some good reviews since the place opened. The Yard also serves some burgers, soup, pasta and salads.
Overall, the relatively new place is quite nice. It’s quiet which and that makes is an ideal place to hold business meetings or family events. The place doesn’t do live music to respect the neighbours in the area, however, they sometimes do shows during Saturday afternoons.
