Kathmandu, January 29
Nepal’s public sector continues to be dogged by corruption even after people’s representatives are running the affairs of the state at different levels of government, a report by the international corruption monitoring body Transparency International says.
According to TI, Nepal is among the most corrupt countries in the world as it is ranked 124th based on its corruption index. Last year, Nepal was ranked 122 on the list. Nepal scored 31 points out of 100 in the 2018 index released on Tuesday.
Even after the elections, cases of corruption, bribery and abuse of authority are still being observed, says TI adding that the government has failed to take action against those involved in corruption and not done enough to ease the people’s access to information.
Of the 180 countries surveyed by TI, around two-thirds have scored 43 points. TI says that the rise of populist leaders around the world threatens the balance of power.
TI has ranked Denmark as the least corrupt country in the world while Somalia has earned the dubious title of the most corrupt countries in the world. In South Asia, Bhutan is the least corrupt country (25) while India has been ranked at 79, Sri Lanka 89, Pakistan 117. the Maldives 124, Bangladesh 149 and Afghanistan 172.
