Kathmandu, August 4
A group of human rights activists have demanded that the National Human Rights Commission launch an investigation into the death of Kumar Paudel, Sarlahi district in-charge of the banned Maoist party led by Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’.
The Accountability Watch Committee on Sunday submitted its report of its preliminary onsite monitoring to NHRC chairman Anup Raj Sharma and demanded the probe.
Whereas the government has been insisting that Paudel was killed in a police encounter, the group has said that there are many reasons to suspect that Paudel was killed extrajudicially after detention. Therefore, a fair probe is needed, according to the team.
Citing that the constitutional body investigated similar cases also in the past, but did not make the report and recommendations public, the group has said that the commission should conclude the investigation and effectively work to make sure that the recommendations are implemented.
Paudel was killed on June 20.
