The District Administration Office of Parsa has extended the curfew order within the Birgunj Metropolitan area until midnight tonight.
Following a clash between two communities, a curfew was initially imposed from Saturday at 7:30 PM until Sunday at 12 am. As the situation has yet to normalize, the administration has decided to continue the curfew until midnight tonight, April 13.
Chief District Officer Ganesh Aryal informed that the curfew has been enforced from Bypass Road in the east, Sirsiya Bridge in the west, Power House Chowk in the north, and Shankaracharya Gate in the south.
“We have extended the curfew until midnight tonight. Further decisions will be made after analysing the situation,” he said.
The clash occurred on Saturday at around 4:50 PM when a religious procession organized by the World Hindu Council Nepal, Birgunj Metropolitan Committee, reached the front of Jama Masjid located at Shreeram Hall in Ward No. 2 of Birgunj.
As tensions escalated, police fired five rounds of tear gas at 5:40 PM. During the clash, a motorcycle was set on fire, and a refrigerator was also taken out of a shop and torched. Eight police personnel deployed at the scene were injured.
