TU FSU elections unlikely on Feb 26

Kathmandu, February 6

Tribhuvan University is unlikely to hold free student unions’ elections on February 26 after a major party running for the elections–Nepal Student Union–demanded that the polls be rescheduled.

The NSU, aligned to the main opposition Nepali Congress, has said the elections cannot take place on the scheduled date as it was not consulted while fixing it. The NSU central committee’s term had expired a few months ago and the party has appointed a new ad-hoc committee just last week. Hence, the organisation’s president Rajeev Dhungana says he does not know whom the TU consulted before his appointment.

He demands that the TU consult the student unions again and fix a new date. Meanwhile, the ruling Nepal Communist Party-aligned All Nepal National Independent Students Union has said it is ready to give one month’s time to the NSU.

The TU rules demand that the university finalise the election schedule one month before the voting, but the schedule has not been made public yet.
