Kathmandu, June 8
Former speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has gone back to his birthplace in Rolpa. A photo of him ploughing a field has been viral on social media recently.
The leader had lost the speaker’s position after being alleged of sexual misconduct in October last year. Kathmandu District Court acquitted him later. With the acquittal, Mahara has been attending the House meetings as a member. However, his presence has been nominal in national political affairs.
Hence, Mahara has got time to return to his village and get engaged in farming activities this year. “While being active in politics, I was always outside [of the village]; I could not plough my farm,” the leader says, “Now, we got time for farming and the entire family has returned.”
Since going back to the village three days ago, Mahara has been doing farm works every morning and evening. In the afternoons, he is busy meeting his cadres and relatives.
“He has always been a hard worker. He can do all types of works on the farm,” Mahara’s relative Purna KC, also the mayor of Rolpa municipality, says, adding the leader’s son Atom helps his father in farming.
In the Liwang village, Mahara owns eight ropani (over 4,000 square metre) plot of land and a traditional two-storey house. In his property details made public in the past, Mahara had said a local cooperating was using the properties.
KC says the locals in the area have considered Mahara’s involvement in agriculture positively.
