UML feud: Oli-led committee launches another round of action against rivals

The central committee meeting of the KP Sharma Oli-led CPN-UML, in Kathmandu, on Monday, April 19, 2021.

Kathmandu, April 19

The central committee meeting of the CPN-UML has decided to seek clarifications from the party’s senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal among eight leaders of the party.

The meeting held on Monday initiated the action after four lawmakers in the Karnali Provincial Assembly defied the party whip to vote for Chief Minister Mahendra Bahadur Shahi to let him continue his government last week.

Those being asked for clarification are Madhav Kumar Nepal, Bhim Rawal, Ghanashyam Bhusal, Surendra Pandey, Prakash Jwala, Nanda Singh Budha, Kurma Raj Shahi, and Amar Thapa. The latter four had voted for Shahi, assumedly upon the directive of Nepal, Rawal, Bhusal, and Pandey.

The decision comes at a time when the party is on the verge of another split with the Nepal-led camp launching a months-long campaign forming parallel committees of sister organisations and district units.

If the clarifications submitted by the leaders would be dissatisfactory, the next meeting to be held on Friday will take further action against them, leaders attending the meeting informed.

Earlier also, Oli had sought clarifications from Nepal, Bhim Rawal, Surendra Pandey and Ghanashyam Bhusal for speaking and acting against the party leadership–eventually to suspend them from the party.
