The first case of black fungus death in Nepal

Dhangadhi, June 3

In the first reported fatality due to black fungus infection (mucormycosis) in Nepal, a 65-year-old man died while undergoing treatment at the Seti Provincial Hospital in Kailali of Sudurpaschim on Thursday.

The hospital’s information officer Dilip Shrestha says the man from Bardagoriya-6 of Kailali was admitted to the hospital on Monday. He also had some kidney problem and was diagnosed with mucormycosis on Wednesday, informs Dr Sher Bahadur Kamar of the hospitals.

The man was tested for the coronavirus also on Tuesday, but his result came negative. “During treatment, we saw black spots near his lips. Then, we suspected the black fungus infection and performed a test,” informs Dr Ashok Shreepali.

The fatal disease has been found in hundreds of Covid-19 patients in India whereas some Nepali hospitals have also reported the infection among Covid-19 patients of late.
