The Supreme Court has acquitted four former chief justices of contempt of court charge that was on trial for the past nine months.
A verdict made by the division bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana and Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla on Friday observed that the writ petitioner’s claim could not be validated.
Days after the then prime minister KP Sharma Oli had dissolved the House of Representatives in December 2020, former chief justices Min Bahadur Rayamajhi, Anup Raj Sharma, Kalyan Shrestha, and Sushila Karki had issued a statement, staying the court should quash the government’s decision to dissolve the House and reinstate it.
Claiming the statement disrespected the independent judiciary, advocate Dhan Jit Basnet filed the case in January 2021.
