Kathmandu, December 31

Vandals, yet to be identified, have broken a Malla-era stone inscription at Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site at the centre of Kathmandu, on Thursday night.

Sandeep Khanal, the chief of the Hanumandhoka Durbar Herchah Adda under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, says the inscription was placed there during the reign of Pratap Malla in the late 1640s.

Khanal informs his office has collected all pieces of the inscription and kept them safe. He says he is consulting experts on how to reestablish the inscription.

The office has also informed the Metropolitan Police Circle, Hanumandhoka, and the Department of Archaeology about the incident.
