Kathmandu, April 2
Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is currently in New Delhi on a three-day official visit to India, has asked his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to resolve the existing Nepal-India border dispute via a bilateral mechanism.
In his statement during a joint press meeting in New Delhi on Saturday, Deuba said he had proposed with Modi to seek a solution to the long-standing dispute.
“We discussed the boundary issues and I urged Modiji to resolve it through established bilateral mechanisms,” Deuba told the media at the end of his statement.
The Nepal-India border dispute has escalated since 2019 when India published its new political map including the dispute region of Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Limpudekh. In response, Nepal had also amended its political map to include the disputed region the next year.
Following that too, the Indian side apparently controls the area whereas Indian border security personnel abusing Nepali personnel also frequently appear.
When Deuba and Modi met in Glasgow, Scotland on the sidelines of the United Nations 26th Climate Conference (COP26) in November 2021, Deuba was criticised for not holding talks on the Nepal-India border issues.
4 agreements signed
Meanwhile, officials of Nepal and India signed four bilateral agreements in presence of Deuba and Modi in New Delhi on Saturday.
Deuba is scheduled to return home on Sunday after a visit to the holy city of Varanasi.
