The Supreme Court has ordered Pokhara metropolitan city not to adopt its new rule to protect the Phewa lake, the central attraction of the city, from encroachment.
The new rule had banned anyone from building physical structures within 30 metres of the shore.
But since a previous rule had stated the structures would not be allowed within 65 metres of the shore, some stakeholders had filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court demanding measures to conserve the natural resource.
Claiming that the city, which is Nepal’s tourism capital, could not make a decision as it went against the decision taken by the supreme court, advocate Khagendra Subedi filed a writ petition at the apex court.
The supreme court in April 2018 had told the city to demolish all physical structures built 65 metres on the shore of Phewa lake. The city office did nothing and instead in March changed the rule to 30 metres.
