Kathmandu, March 27
A group of landless squatters on Monday staged a protest in Kathmandu against the city’s mayor Balen Shah.
After the city government issued a public notice, giving them seven days to leave the riverside government land and other public property they are occupying.
The demonstrators argue the plan to evict them from their residences, without giving an alternative, is a breach of the constitution and existing laws.
Kumar Karki, a leader of the group, warns the protest will intensify if the city government does not withdraw the notice.
Time and again, the city government has been making efforts to remove the squatters from the public land but has failed, owing to their resistance citing a lack of alternatives.
