Kathmandu, April 28
Nepal’s pangolin conservationist Tulshi Laxmi Suwal won this year a prestigious Whitley Award. The Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) announced the award on Wednesday.
Dr Suwal has been involved in pangolin research and conservation efforts in Nepal for over 15 years, conducting the first-ever PhD study on the species in the country, according to the award provider.
The Whitley Awards are known as Green Oscars, and they provide £40,000 in project funding over one year.
The organisation says with the prize money, Tulshi Laxmi Suwal will “lead the country’s first impact assessment on the effects of fire on forest habitat of the critically endangered Chinese pangolin, one of the most trafficked mammals in the world.”
Last year, Nepal’s red panda conservation activist Sonam Lama was among the winners of the prestigious awards.
